When the phrase Information Free of charge comes up on your news readers and in the newspapers in the coming months, you will know that it began right here, and with Wikipedia and Orange, who together will be offering free – that is, without data costs – use of Wikipedia’s huge understanding archive. What this means for the long term of the mobile sector is this: the door has been opened to totally free information, or at least that’s what Wikipedia is aiming at by means of mobile end users in Africa and the Middle East soon. Orange and the Wikimedia Foundation have announced in a press release today that they are aiming to make their store of info readily available for totally free to people who require it, people who otherwise would have no this sort of basic access to the information you and I take for granted. Africa and the Middle East, otherwise acknowledged as AMEA, will have entry to Wikipedia at no charge by means of their internet-enabled phone so long as it has an Orange SIM inside it. This project is part of a greater campaign initiated by the Wikimedia Foundation to connect with people across the earth whose only access to the net is through their phone. This project and offering will be rolling out during 2012, reaching at some point a complete of 20 African and Middle Eastern countries that Orange has a presence in. Sue Gardner, Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation had the following to say:
“Wikipedia is an important service, a public very good — and so we want individuals to be able to access it for free of charge, irrespective of what device they are using. This partnership with Orange will allow millions of men and women to go through Wikipedia, who previously couldn’t.” – Gardner Look like a fairly amazing program to you? Then on an additional note: do you assume this is the begin of subsidized “free” information for users around the globe, or will it be limited to applications specifically like this one? Wikipedia are you undertaking a bunch of great right here?

January 24, 2012

This is a glass floor supported completely by the combined effort of 180,000 tiny plastic people. It was constructed by South Korean artist Do Ho Suh and at very first I thought all the figurines had been women and the floor represented the glass ceiling, but then I recognized I got high with the bartender on my lunch break and I’m studying way as well far into factors. Oh shit, oh shit — this popup says I just won an iPad!
